Building confidence

changing the world

When was the last time you kissed the mirror?

We start off as children in love with our reflections – fascinated, excited, mesmerized. Meaghan Ramsey’s one-year old niece gives herself big wet kisses when faced with her own adorable reflection.

In her enlightening TED talk Meaghan, a self-esteem advocate and inspiring New Leader, wants to know why we stop kissing the mirror. When does it stop being okay to love the way that we look?

Our bodies enable us to do so much, but for one in five girls, how they feel about their bodies affects their decision to even turn up to school and learn. This link between body confidence and self-esteem is damaging a whole generation of girls and young women who only see a negative reflection in the mirror.

Every month 10,000 people Google ‘Am I ugly?’ while thousands of girls post videos of themselves online asking the same question. The effects of low self-esteem are heartbreaking. Six out of 10 girls are choosing not to take part in important activities such as sports or debate simply because they don't think they look good enough. Studies show that young people who don’t feel good about the way they look score a lower grade point average in exams than their peers.

If we could empower young people to see their true selves they would love the reflection looking back at them.

How girls and young women think they look is affecting all aspects of their lives, from their health and education to their work and personal relationships. That’s why Meaghan is passionate about leading a mission to build body confidence and self-esteem by celebrating individuality, diversity and inclusion.

Together, from grassroots to governments, we can build a world where kids are free to become the best versions of themselves.

We need the next generation to build a brighter future. Let’s help them by giving them the confidence to be the change-makers of the tomorrow.
