Rubbish for Healthcare

A Winning Solution for Sanitation

In Indonesia Gamal Albinsaid has devised one brilliant solution to address the issues surrounding both healthcare and garbage disposal. His ingenious micro health insurance scheme, Garbage Clinical Insurance (GCI), provides families with healthcare in exchange for their rubbish.

Every day urban cities in Indonesia produce 55 thousand tons of garbage – but only 50-60% of it is collected. Not only is this damaging for the environment, it is also unhygienic and poses a health risk to citizens. Close to 80 million people struggle to afford healthcare. The government has a plan to create universal healthcare, but in the meantime, Gamal’s solution is helping millions in need.

GCI is a two-prong sword, giving people both affordable healthcare and encouraging rubbish-free communities. GCI increases the economic value of the rubbish by using organic matter for compost and fertiliser, while recycling the other materials that they are not able to compost. The money made from the rubbish is then put into a health fund, where members can get medical examinations, consultations and treatment as well as using ambulances.

Gamal’s inspiring programme earned him the first ever Unilever Young Entrepreneur Award. Not only does he hope his programme will get healthcare to those who need it, but also he wants more people to be inspired to work on good causes. “I believe if the positives of this programme are made known it will excite a lot more people into adopting it. I hope with more people knowing about this programme, there will be a lot more people doing good things like this all over the world.”
