Sustainable palm oil
can benefit everyone
You might not know it, but you probably don’t go a day without using palm oil. From shampoo to ice cream, half the items on our supermarket shelves contain palm oil – we cook with it, clean with it and even put it on our skin. The good news? Unilever has changed the way it sources palm oil so that everyone can reap the benefits. We now source 100% of our European palm oil sustainably and by 2020 all of our palm oil will be from certified, traceable sources.
Palm Oil isn’t just an important ingredient for your favourite products. For many families across Indonesia, Africa and Latin America, their livelihoods depend on the crop, which is why it’s vital that we work to find better, more sustainable ways to produce it.
Every year Unilever buy 1.5 million tonnes of sustainable palm oil. This helps us not only to deliver a range of products, but it means we can support communities who farm responsibly and depend on this versatile and economical crop. Producing palm oil provides a good income to smallholders so they can afford to send their children to college1. We want other companies to join us in supporting sustainable palm oil and driving long-term change in the industry.

Irresponsible practices in palm oil production have already impacted people’s livelihoods and the environment through deforestation, while contributing to global warming. But we are confident that we can meet the demands of a growing population, while putting an end to deforestation, protecting peat land and driving a positive impact for local communities.
In 2004, we became founding members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). We now source 100% of our palm oil sustainably and by 2020 all of our palm oil will be from certified, traceable sources. We want others to join us, which is why we are leading the charge to break the link between palm oil and deforestation. 400 members of the Consumer Goods Forum have already joined us in committing to zero deforestation by 2020. We’re so committed to sustainable, responsible living, that we now top Oxfam’s ‘Behind the Brands’ scorecard. Supporting sustainable, traceable palm oil is one important area where we can continue to make a big difference.
We believe we can all reap the benefits of this important crop, while giving back to communities and our planet.
