Cracking Good Eggs

For a Happy Planet

Quality food isn’t just about great taste, it’s about feeling good about what we’re putting into our bodies and where the ingredients have come from. Through small, everyday choices, each and every one of us can help to build a bright future.

The simple choices made when food shopping can help make a positive difference, not just to the taste of a meal, but to the long-term health of the planet and the livelihood of millions of people worldwide. The threat of climate change, combined with a fast-growing population, is putting serious strain on Earth’s natural resources – this is why a sustainable approach is so vital. We believe sustainability creates great tasting ingredients but it’s about so much more than that; it is about people and businesses making important choices at every stage – from the farm to the supermarket aisle, in order to secure the world we live in for future generations to come.

A bright future has already begun

Hellmann’s Mayonnaise is made with sustainably sourced, simple ingredients, like free-range eggs. Because we believe real ingredients deserve a real commitment. We have set ourselves a target to source 100% of our agricultural ingredients sustainably by 2020 and we’re already well on our way. In 2009 – a year ahead of schedule – Hellmann’s delivered on its pledge to use 100% free-range eggs in the United Kingdom to make its mayonnaise. That’s a lot of happy hens and tasty mayonnaise! It’s not just the eggs, Hellmann’s oil is being sourced from ever more sustainable sources too. In 2014 70% of the rapeseed oil sourced for Hellmann’s mayonnaise came from a sustainable source.

Around three-quarters of Europe’s 300 million egg-laying hens are still kept in battery cages where they are denied natural light and are unable to do the things that come naturally to chickens, like perching, nest-building and dust-bathing. Free-range hens have a better quality of life and are able to access outdoor runs. Making responsible choices leaves us all free to enjoy a cracking good taste, a good feeling and a happy planet.
