Changing habits

changing the world

Climate change is already affecting the earth but we can help slow it down by taking action – small actions – that reduce carbon emissions and build a better planet.

Mornings are a time for hot showers and hot coffee. For freshening up and preparing for the day ahead. But they can also be a chance for us to incorporate one or two small actions that could change the world.

It might seem unlikely, but how we get clean impacts the environment, and by making positive choices every morning, we can make that impact a positive one.

Unilever have already made some progress, such as reformulating concentrated detergents to reduce greenhouse gases, and halving the size of deodorant cans. But we all can do much more!

Here are some easy ways we can all do our bit, every morning:

  • Fill the kettle with just enough water for your coffee
  • Have a shorter shower. Getting clean doesn’t need to cost the earth. A five-minute shower, instead of an eight-minute one not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, it can also save the average UK family over £400 a year
  • Ask yourself if you need to wash your hair two days in a row, or if dry shampoo will keep it looking healthy without wasting water
  • Use products that have been reformulated to cut carbon emissions
  • Wash laundry at 30°– put a whole load on and leave it to dry while you’re at work instead of using the tumble dryer

If one million people switched to compressed deodorants, we could save 696 tonnes of Co2. We might feel powerless, but if we tread a little lighter on the earth together we can build a better future. Sometimes all it takes is one small action a day.

Switching to 30 degrees uses 40 percent less electricity
