BANKING ON FOOD

Working in partnership with Oxfam

To End Food Poverty in the UK

Many UK families struggle to make ends meet. At Unilever, we are working with Oxfam, and its partners, Trussell Trust and FareShare. We are committed to doing everything we can to turn this around. We see a bright future where people from every background can thrive.

Together with Oxfam, we are working together to tackle food poverty head on. We're determined that no child should go to school without breakfast. Nor should parents have to skip meals so their children can eat.

By working with Oxfam and their partners Trussell Trust, we have directly helped launch 41 foodbanks. In doing so, Unilever has helped provide over two million meals to those in need.

Our partnership also enables us to work with FareShare, the UK’s largest charity tackling food waste. FareShare redistribute food to over 1700 charities and community groups in the UK. This food would otherwise have gone to waste. Since 2012, we’ve helped ensure 700 tonnes of food have gone to those that need it rather than being thrown away. This food has gone on to provide meals for local people at lunch clubs, breakfast clubs and community cafes.

What is a foodbank?

Foodbanks are a last resort. They can only be accessed through referral by a doctor or social worker. Some families are referred because they can’t afford to cook hot food. However, they all arrive with one thing in common: hunger. Those in need are given three days of emergency food.

Support doesn’t end there though. Foodbank volunteers also provide emotional support to people in crisis, and help them get practical support to get their lives back on track. Last year, they provided emergency food to over 300,000 children.

You too can help families who through no fault of their own are unable to feed themselves. Simply visit Trussell Trust’s website to see how to get involved. Together we can create a world where no one has to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Join us, and help create a brighter future for everybody.
