Turn your carvings into cravings
What's scarier than witches, ghosts and ghouls at Halloween? How about the haunting 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkin that ends up in the bin each year? That's the same weight as 1,500 double decker buses!
In the UK, we throw away over 7 million tonnes of edible food and drink from our homes each year, costing the average UK household £60 every month. Halloween is one of the most wasteful seasons in the year with only an estimated one-third of people cooking their pumpkin carvings.
Did you know:
- 64% of pumpkin buyers at Halloween don’t use the insides.
- A quarter of those who buy pumpkins don’t compost the waste, simply throwing it in the bin with everything else.
- Nearly half of people believe that pumpkins are a hassle to cook with.
We want to change this!
At Unilever, we’re working in partnership with the environmental charity, Hubbub, to reduce this kind of food waste. Charlotte Carroll, our Sustainability Director for Unilever UK and Ireland said:
"The frightful volume of delicious and healthy pumpkins going uneaten is a food waste horror story. This Halloween, with our much loved Knorr, Flora and Stork brands, we want to inspire the nation to turn their pumpkin carvings into cravings with a selection of scrumptious seasonal recipes. Get involved at #pumpkinrescue"
Unilever and our brands are partnering with Hubbub on the Pumpkin Rescue campaign this Halloween, as part of our Joint Ambition for a Zero Food Waste Britain. Pumpkins are just one example of the huge amount of edible food we throw away, and we want to show there are many easy alternatives to binning food.
Trewin Restorick, CEO of Hubbub said:
“As Halloween continues to grow in popularity in the UK, it’s really important that this doesn’t create an ever larger mountain of food waste. We must recognise that pumpkins are a valuable source of food and not just for decoration. Halloween is a great opportunity to help our children understand where food comes from and involve them in cooking a simple meal with their pumpkin carvings.”
Pumpkin Rescue events
Since the launch of Pumpkin Rescue in 2014, Hubbub have helped to save 25 tonnes of pumpkin from landfill, hosted 73 local events, and reached millions of people across the UK with food waste messaging.
This year, Hubbub and Unilever are supporting local communities across the UK to deliver over 40 Pumpkin Rescue events, which aim to celebrate food, to introduce new skills and to find creative alternatives to throwing food away. Our brand Knorr will support a selection of events, providing free stock cubes and recipe cards to visitors as well as hot Pumpkin soup.
We want to make Pumpkin Rescue the biggest and most successful ever. But we can’t do it alone and we hope you will join us.
Here’s how you can help support Pumpkin Rescue this Halloween:
- Follow the campaign on social media, and share your thoughts using #PumpkinRescue.
- Turn your carvings into cravings with a delicious Knorr pumpkin soup, Flora pumpkin pie or even Stork pumpkin cupcakes!
- Pumpkin Rescue events come in all shapes and sizes – from staff lunches, pop-up classes, to giant festivals. Do you want to host your own event? Visit Hubbub online to find out how.
